Invicta Racing is proud to announce that driver Leonardo Fornaroli has sealed the 2025 FIA Formula 2 Drivers’ Championship after a season-long battle for the title reached its conclusion in Lusail, Qatar.
The 20-year-old Italian capped off a remarkable rookie campaign in F2 with Invicta Racing, securing consecutive championship victories after clinching the FIA Formula 3 title in 2024.
Leonardo becomes the first Italian to take the title in the modern era of the championship and follows in the footsteps of last year’s champion and fellow Invicta Racing driver, Gabriel Bortoleto, continuing the team’s winning legacy at the pinnacle of junior single-seater racing.
From the outset, Leonardo signalled his intent to fight for the title, scoring podium finishes at the opening two rounds in Melbourne and Sakhir. Further podium finishes in Monaco and Spielberg consolidated his momentum, before he stormed to his maiden F2 victory in Silverstone.
A dominant mid-season stretch saw the Invicta Racing driver claim a further three wins in consecutive events at Spa-Francorchamps, Budapest and Monza, extending a championship lead that he would not relinquish for the remainder of the year.
The rookie arrived in Qatar knowing he had to finish the weekend at least 40 points ahead of his championship rivals to claim top honours at the penultimate round. The Italian was promoted to pole for the Feature Race after Oliver Goethe was penalised, allowing him to start the race from the most important position.
A slow start saw him drop to P2, a position he would remain for the race, even after his mandatory pitstop where he came out in a net P2 behind Victor Martins. He continued to apply pressure but was unable to catch the French driver and settled for the second step on the podium.
Consistency proved to be the cornerstone of Leonardo’s campaign. The Italian established himself as one of the most dependable qualifiers on the grid, never starting outside the top 10 all season and becoming the first driver to score repeat pole positions.
Despite two retirements midway through the year, Leonardo still managed to finish in the points in 23 of the 25 races before securing the title, underscoring his remarkable composure and ability to maximise results even during challenging weekends.
Although 2025 marked his and Invicta Racing’s first season together the two quickly found an effective partnership, culminating in victory at the end of an ultra-competitive campaign.
The battle for the Teams’ Championship continues into the final round at Yas Island, Abu Dhabi next weekend.
EYAL LALO, CEO INVICTA WATCH GROUP, CHAIRMAN & TEAM OWNER INVICTA RACING:
“I could not be prouder of Leonardo Fornaroli for capturing the Formula 2 Championship. Watching his consistency, determination, and focus throughout the season has been inspiring for all of us. Leo earned this title through sheer talent and heart, and it is an honour to have him as part of the Invicta Racing family and our winning culture.”
James Robinson, CEO AND TEAM PRINCIPAL, INVICTA RACING:
““It’s an incredible achievement for Leo to win the Drivers’ Championship. He has been exemplary ever since the first session in Melbourne where he went P1 in his first push lap in Qualifying. We knew then we had somebody who had an incredible ability to execute when he needed to and he’s been extremely consistent, always qualifying in the top ten, which is so important in Formula 2. It’s not to be overlooked that he’s won the championship with a round to spare, that’s hardly ever been done, so for a rookie to come in and do that shows his immense talent. Winning back-to-back driver titles is also an immense testament to everyone in the team and underlines our legacy in the championship.”
leonardo fornaroli:
““Winning the F2 Championship is an incredible feeling – I still can’t believe it. After taking the F3 title last year, following it with the F2 title in my rookie season feels amazing. Clinching it with a round to go is a dream, as I can race in Abu Dhabi without that pressure and focus on securing the Teams’ Championship. It’s been a fantastic year, full of highs and challenges, with some intense battles, and I’ve had the opportunity to learn so much. I can’t thank Invicta Racing enough for their hard work and support – I could not have done this without them. This is a moment I will never forget.”
